cheap present was formed in 2013 as a collaborative project between melbourne artists env and luis cl serving as an outlet for the pair to experiment outside of their main musical acts and subsequent genre limitations.
cheap present�s music is mostly recorded live in the studio with minimal overdubs and draws sounds and influences from various sources. using old keyboards and samples mixed with digital high definition sounds, the duo create a mixture of raw elements from the techno and dance tradition with a nod to classical melodies and industrial music. each song features heavy drums to highlight the melodic playfulness of their bass, synth arrangements and humorous but expressive vocals and song titles. the anterior mini lp follows on from the duo�s wet garden cassette earlier in the year and presents a collection of material looking back from the group�s creation in 2013 to more recent output. the pair�s evolution is clearly on display on the this 12 inch, from initial jam based songs such as waterproofyouth and bergwasser, which have a spontaneous metallic edge, to new songs such as rooftops, which display a more meticulous and mature approach to production.

�i�ve said it before, but dancehall and its influence on uk music has been a massive inspiration for me, going way back to hearing chris goldfinger on radio 1 playing music that was like nothing else i�d heard before. i love that fundamental rhythmic pattern, and i love how within the same world you can have some tunes that are built around the sweetest melodies and harmonies, and others that are built around super-tuff minimal drums and crazy squeeks and bleeps.
when it came time to build another ep for critical, i decided to link up with my good friend and long-time collaborator rider shafique, who has a much deeper knowledge of this music than me, and together create something that references both old and new dancehall, while still being playable in the kinds of sets i ve become known for. there�s no halftime and no chopped-up jungle breaks here - we wanted to make something really focussed and even disciplined - and hopefully we�ve succeeded.

we ve been closely watching the rise of a sagittariun ever since he first popped up with his consistently excellent elastic dreams label back in 2011. what started out as an anonymous project has since been revealed as the handiwork of nick harris, a long time champion of the bristol house and techno scene since before most of us were even hitting the dance. his music has been flying out with a no nonsense approach self-released, minimal promo, just cracking club-ready 12inches that tap into the fierce-but-fun spirit of detroit techno and albums loaded with smokers delights to appease his west country roots.

in the field of minimal house reissues, this is a big deal. perlon main man dimbiman doesn�t appear on wax often, but when he does he makes it count. this early release on baby ford s seminal pal sl was originally out in 1998, when minimal house was a vague concept at best on the most outer reaches of dance music. -iso grifo- itself remains a masterclass of spine-chilling space and perfectly strange sonic matter, while -lava- pushes the notion of reduction dance music to its absolute limit. -round- is an even more immersive affair that hides many subtle layers within its seemingly simple construct. quite simply groundbreaking stuff, and highly sought after so don�t sleep on it.

london minimal techno label trapped ldn turn their attention to new talent rhys samson, who gets freaky from the get go with the snaking beats and threads of psychoactive melodies and found sounds that make up the snappily titled -paramedic to the dancefloor-. cosmjn delivers a very different kind of remix of the original that has a more discoid flavour to it, although it maintains the late night trippiness that trapped prefer overall. -religious clowns- is a deeper jam that seeks to soothe, albeit with plentiful rippling details still coursing through its veins, which alan castro capitalizes on with a remix that gets even more intricate and strange.

giant records 10th release is from new york born adam collins and limited to 150 hand stamped and numbered copies. adam is widely known for his work as one half of production duo omni am, along with marky star and counts derrick carter and evil eddie richards and a whole host of others, amongst their fans. adam�s release for giant is titled - day2day and has all the trademark�s of adam�s wonky, left of field, slightly off kilter grooves - day2day builds and snakes itself into a bottom bass heavy house jam - chicago style keys mould the snare and hats into an infectious work out - with an alien like hook that keeps it all slightly wobbly. the next cut is from the super talented carl finlow under carl�s random factor guise, a beauty in its own right ! super tight drums and a punchy random factor bassline take�s this mix on a journey through many shades of electronica - as the track swells nicely with warm atmospheric pads and sprinkles of emotive keys, with an electro style hook that keep�s it all swinging in carl�s trademark sound. the next mix is from la based producer mieka du franx. mieka�s mix strips the original down to the bare essentials and gives it a tuff minimal feel. the last mix is from echo of glory, which see�s echo take the track on a acid tinged work out - adding dubbed out vocals and super subbed out bass.

french producer okain has long been entrenched in the minimal house movement, from time spent on four:twenty and tsuba through to memoria, no fit state and now shoring up on dogmatik. babylon is a sharply focused workout with playful organ trills darting in and out of the mix, while radio therapy gets into a light-headed, bubbly state of mind thanks to some shimmering synth work. permeable drops a little dubby magic on the track and r4r5r6 finishes the ep off with a more muscular groover for when you need to keep the energy up on the dancefloor.

after spending years venturing between ocean and land, i.m.j.u.s has found solitude back in his hometown, seoul. upon returning he has dedicated himself to delivering the paganist delusion e.p. five recordings of melting rythmics derived from hypnotic minimal to pace driving tracks. i.m.j.u.s break codes up and this output shows his unique and unconventional sound interpretation. with inspiration peculiarly drawn from industrial sounds through his experiences, we are left with a convergence of experimental and uniquely imaginative techno.

mind records is a finnish record label and a record store in finland owned by marko laine (also known of his works on djax-up-beats, drop bass network and planet rhythm). now after 18 years since last release there�s a new 12� offering some serious dark, hypnotic minimal techno by a new finnish talent j. lyden.

the complete twr72 - lucid release wasn�t enough so it gets a remix treatment by psyk, henning baer, rod, neznan and twr72 itself.
psyk kicks off with a tom based space out remix of lucid. heavy soundscapes and pads are layered over the fine rhythm of toms. henning baer takes care of aporia with a weird metal loop kinda vibe and a straight forward beat rhythm to keep the speed.
twr72 gave colloquial a groovy treatment. with minimal, filtered and slightly oldskool elements they changed the original parts into a little killer. talking about minimal, on the flipside rod delivers greatness on lucid with his cut and slide technique. neznan closes the ep in style, because his style is impeccable. when you thought you�ve heard it all, neznan jumps in. an experimental take on erudite is what you get. and like always, there are hidden messages in his music.

obscurum is a two man outfit based in fuerth, germany. formed by roland l. and d. blaze, who have collaborated musically together since 1995. they also own the following labels: e-com, exalt and seico corp. known for their preference for minimal detroit techno music, they command international credibility. dark electronics and pumpin techno with an industrial tinge. several releases on e-com/exalt/seico corp. unite their typical style of production which puts the mechanical part of their music in the front row. functionality without any compromise.

this is a reissue of �casioworks� by gust de meyer, originally released as a cassette on ding dong tapes and records in 1983. this stuff has been making crooked collectors, old and young minimal-wave heads and other music lovers going bonkers for years. at the age of 35, back in 1983, gust de meyer was working as an assistant at the faculty of social sciences of the catholic university of leuven, were he did some groundbreaking work. he got a phd in musical industry and introduced the study of video games.

emotional rescue and malka tuti recognise their shared passion for globe-trotting sounds and team up to present this album from c cat trance, a project from john rees lewis who was formerly of post punkers medium medium. it s no surprise to learn that this was a project of the 1980s, as all the hallmarks are there. with the same outernational attitude that made the work of eno, hassell, czukay, wobble and scores more so alluring, this collection shines a light on a true gem of the era and provides a fresh pressing of some stone cold leftfield party groovers like shake the mind.

this is the first release of the beau mot plage collective, the minimal/house focused project of la chinerie. this output introduces nunes, a talented young producer based in the south of france. it comes with two original tracks deeply leading into nunesÆ inspirations with jazzy vibe and an hypnotic feeling taking place through deep bass and sharp rhythmics. the b side is a remix made with all tracks from the well known traumer who delivers a more dancefloor oriented version of nunesÆ work.

assemble music brings together four more producers at the forefront of today�s fine minimal/house/electro scene. eklo boss seuil kicks things off with jam, a slowly-unfolding confection of metallic percussion and rolling bass set against a meditative, minor backdrop. his fellow half baked resident robin ordell brings a tipsy-sounding vibe to mobsiw, each element swaying its way around the others in an off-key dance. les points� barbir adds detroit hats to a no-shits-given breakbeat and suspends it in time, before finally a 4/4 kick comes to put feet back on the ground. finally, traffic founders martyné and jacob draw on more contemporary breaks and electro influences on electronetto, with that laissez-faire swing with which their label has become synonymous.

as the summer closes and the autumn arrives the project releases its next selection with label boss frazer campbell and dark arts techno head stu crosbie. not a stranger to the label having appeared on the previous release stuart once again delivers his unique filtered sound of stripped back minimal techno with hints of trippy yet groovy influences of dark back room excursions. a real master of simplicity but exact definition of sombre sounds. the flip side presents a very different sonic description by frazer. �bleeding gums� holds broken beat kicks with rolling drums but as always carries a true sense of emotion and warmth. the ep closes with �deebling mugs� which is a production full of drive, dirty basslines and groove that will keep any dance floor moving as we wave goodbye to the summer of 2017.
